Medical Services
Over twenty years experience and knowledge, all in one packageAs a paramedic for almost
a quarter of a century Damian has provided his medical skills, knowledge and experience to those in need, through his career in the NHS and as a private contractor.Think ‘Paramedic’ and most people will think ‘Ambulance Driver’, and nothing could be further from the truth. Admittedly most Paramedics will have driven an ambulance at some point in their career, but how many have also been taken to a patient by sea? Or by air? Or by crawling through the rubble of a bombing?
Challenging the boundaries of pre-hospital medicine has been at the forefront of Damians medical journey since day one and he has continued to seek opportunities to practise outside the normally accepted clinical settings without dropping his high standards of both patient assessment and care.
Starting his medical career in 1999, Damian was fortunate enough to be taught by a number of veteran paramedics in the NHS ambulance service. Being stationed about as far from hospital as he could get, he took the lessons provided to him by his peers to hone his skills and practise them on the extended journey times to his local hospitals. This experience earned him coveted positions throughout his career, working regionally on helicopter air ambulances, as a solo responder at an international airport, leading a team on a hazardous area response unit and earning a number of awards along the way.
Being recognised as a clinician who always puts patient care first he moved from the NHS to become Clinical Lead providing medical services to Essex, Hertfordshire and City of London police forces. Having started a police career back in the nineties, and training police ‘advanced medics’ during his tenure in the NHS, supporting the thin blue line has never been far from Damians heart.
During the global Coronavirus pandemic Damian utilised his knowledge and experience to step forward once more, managing COVID vaccination hubs in his home found county. He also undertook a course in Clinical UX, (User Experience), in order to use his previous knowledge and expertise in the digital arena, researching and designing for patient centred platforms.
Throughout this time Damian has always looked to provide help wherever it may be needed, at the road side, in the air, and at sea. Recently he provided expedition medical support for sports person and adventurer Ross Edgely in his world record swim in Loch Ness, Scotland.
“I get a great deal of pleasure from providing my medical expertise in situations that fall outside the boundaries of ‘normal pre-hospital care’, or ‘working on an ambulance’. I used to think that I was not alone in this, but I’ve found that many colleagues aren’t comfortable operating without the backup of a hospital a short drive away, or even working alone, let alone dealing with situations that involve maladies that don’t appear often, if at all, such as hypothermia or trench foot. Providing the skills of a paramedic in unusual circumstances is a skill set that is waning, luckily for me it’s a test that I enjoy. Adapting, improvising and overcoming the challenge of whatever is thrown at me.“
